2014 Movies

AUTOMATA- it paints a post-apocalyptic future that is a mix of Blade Runner and Hardware addressing the fear of artificial intelligence as humanity struggles to survive

INTERSTELLAR- Christopher Nolan is able to blend hard science fiction in this tale of love, science, and faith

MOCKINGJAY Part 1 (aka (THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY Part 1)-  The adaptation of the first half of the final novel in the Hunger Games trilogy actually improves on the original source material

EDGE OF TOMORROW (aka LIVE DIE REPEAT: EDGE OF TOMORROW)- a fun and action filled sci-fi movie that was an underperformer at the theaters.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY- one of the most fun sci-fi movies I have seen in years

THE RAID 2- a rare sequel that is able to be as good as and sometimes better than the first film, but you shouldn’t let the subtitles bug you since the action is the central piece of enjoyment

SNOWPIERCER- a sci-fi fable that is like a high octane action film as a group of human survivors make their way to the front of the train holding the last survivors of humankind in this post-apocalyptic film on an ice covered Earth

UNDER THE SKIN- an atmospheric science fiction film that is more about atmosphere than plot, but it transfixed me

THE MACHINE-  a near-future tale of artificial intelligence and the fears of allowing it to thrive while trying to develop advanced technology to fight war

THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL- one of Wes Anderson’s most fun movies as he creates his own unique worlds with a great cast becoming great characters

FRANK- one of my favorite movies of the year where Michael Fassbender steals every scene with his performance as Frank- a musical genius who wears a ginat plastic head all the time

ABOUT TIME- a unique and charming romantic comedy involving time travel

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2-   The relationship between Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy is great, but the rest of the movie could have used more work
