SUSPECT ZERO

DVD Review by David Blackwell

DETAILS: 99 minutes, director commentary, 4 part featurette, remote viewing demonstration, alternate ending, internet trailer, previews

STUDIO: PARAMOUNT

RELEASE DATE: 4-12-2005

ANALYSIS: SUSPECT ZERO is one hell of a ride. Engaging and disturbing. SUSPECT ZERO features stellar performances from Aaron Eckhart and sir Ben Kingsley. Carrie-Anne Moss does get short shrift here as the movie zeros in on FBI Agent Thomas Mackleway (Aaron Eckhart) and Benjamin O'Ryan (Ben Kingsley in a very chilling role).

Agent Mackleway is drawn into an investigation of some murders and all evidence leads to O'Ryan, part of a secret government remote viewing project. O'Ryan is after an elusive serial killer known as Suspect Zero. Mackleway's former partner, Fran (Carrie-Anne Moss), is brought in to help Tom track down O'Ryan. O'Ryan starts sending faxes to Tom. A paper trail that reveals reasons why the victims were killed and gives clues to what Tom can actually do.

E. Elias Merhige has crafted a atmospheric thriller with unique and eye-dropping visuals. He has gathered together a fine cast of actors. Ben Kingsley is able to adapt to any role as he plays the unbalanced O'Ryan that is trying to do a job as the voices of the victims (that serial killers claim) clutter his mind. Ben is intense. His performance is of an unhinged mind who cares too much while being driven mad by the voices of the victims of the serial killers he hunts.  The landscapes and various locations add to the overall feel.   SUSPECT ZERO is a thriller you should not miss.

VIDEO/AUDIO: SUSPECT ZERO is presented in 1.85:1 Anamorphic Widescreen. Colors and blacks are great. Image detail is sharp. The transfer is slightly soft.

Audio options are English 5.1 Dolby Digital and French 5.1 DD with the option of English or Spanish subtitles. The featurettes and alternate ending have the option of English, French, or Spanish subtitles. Commentaries aren't subtitled. Dialogue on the movie comes through clear as a bell. Sound effects and music have a full range that suck you into the environment of the movie. Great audio.

SPECIAL FEATURES: The 4-part featurette "What We See When We Close Our Eyes" focuses on the real remote viewing projects (from the remote viewing research to the military remote viewing program including stories from actual remote viewers) and a little bit about the movie, SUSPECT ZERO. It features interviews with people who were actually involved in Remote Viewing projects and the cast (and director) of SUSPECT ZERO. The 4 parts are HOW WE SEE, REMOTE VIEWING, PSYCHIC SPYING, and A NON-LOCAL WORLD. A very fascinating featurette.

Next, you get treated to a "Remote Viewing demonstration" by the director doing the Remote Viewing! A creepy alternate ending is included (and the director explains via optional commentary why he cut it). The audio commentary for the movie with the director has him talking about the story while revealing scant details about Remote Viewing and the production of the movie. Also included is the internet trailer for the movie and Previews for other Paramount movies including THE MACHINIST.

FINAL ANALYSIS: SUSPECT ZERO is an engaging thriller that kept me watching to the very end. It's unique visuals are captured effectively on DVD with some interesting extras.
