CPS (Central Protection Service) Protector Kiera Cameron (Rachel Nichols) is a cop working for the corporate controlled world in 2077.  She and others are fighting to stop a terrorist group called Liber8 (who want to bring back democracy and end the dystopian world of the corporate governments).  When they capture the main people in the group including the leader, Edouard Kagame, Kiera is assigned to be part of the security detail at the execution of the Liber8 terrorists.  She notices something is up when the terrorists have smuggled in pieces of a device which disrupt the execution.  Kiera tries to stop it and she finds herself back in 2012 where she fights to stop Liber8 from changing the future that she wants to get back to because she has a daughter and husband who are waiting for her back in 2077.  She teams up with teen tech genius Alec Sadler (Eric Knudsen) who is responsible for the tech that Kiera brought with her from the future.  She also poses as an agent in a secret government task force so she can work with local police detective Carlos Fonnegra (Victor Webster) so she can have help to stop the plans of Liber8.

CONTINUUM poses some serious questions as the hero is the person who is working for a restrictive future where the corporations rule while Liber8 is using terrorist tactics to make sure the future doesn’t happen.  Also the episodes make you wonder if all of the events are preordained and Kiera is supposed to be part of the events that were always meant to unfold.  Was Kiera and liber8 always supposed to go back?  What will be the consequences to the future if any of them changes what happens in 2012?

CONTINUUM doesn’t deal in black and white areas.  It is a complex serialized sci-fi series which grows into a show which can be enjoyed on an episodic basis, but the subplots of the ongoing threads make the show more rewarding even on a second viewing.  It also will strike close to some people's hearts as they wonder how much corporations will further control and influence governments.   Are corporate governments the future for some nations on Earth?  Each episode provides some evidence that can go either way on whether Kiera and Liber8 are part of a closed time loop or they are creating a new timeline.  Then the episodes do throw a few curveballs like Kiera having to rely on her wits more when her cybernetic suit is damaged.  Each episode has flashbacks to 2077 while taking place mostly in 2012 Vancouver, British Columbia.  The season finale sets the stage for a change in the status quo as Kiera finds out the truth behind her trip to 2012 among other things.  I just wonder how season 2 will unfold since the first season is one of the best seasons of sci-fi TV I have seen.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

MEET THE MAKERS, PROTECTORS, AND TERRORISTS- interviews with creator Simon Barry, and actors Rachel Nichols, Victor Webster, Eric Knudsen, and Tony Amendola as they talk about their characters and the show.  Simon Barry reveals how the show came about while the actors praise the storytelling.

FINAL ANALYSIS:  CONTINUUM is a complex sci-fi action series that blends sci-fi ideas and the cop show into a series that is worth checking out and returning for season 2 (which starts on April 21 on Showcase (Canada) and June 7 on SyFy (USA).  I hope the next season set has more extras like audio commentaries and a behind-the-scenes featurette.
