Nebraska cop Kathryn Bolkovac (Rachel Weisz) is a divorced mother who accepts a job with Democra to be a U.N. Peacekeeper in Bosina for six months.  She thinks it will be an easy six month tour with a payday of $100,000.  She wants to be closer to her daughter that her ex-husband got custody of.   She does her job quite well and ends up being promoted to the head of Gender Affairs at the UN mission in Bosnia.   It all starts to get complicated when she tries to help two teenage girls who have been brought in as part of a sex trafficking ring.  She discovers that other peacekeepers, local cops, and other people in international positions are involved in the ring.   They don't want their part in the criminal activities revealed.   They push back and even try to bury the investigation.

Rachel Weisz has grown as an actress since her early roles in CHAIN REACTION and the first two films of THE MUMMY series.  She transformed into an actress who fills her characters with emotional depth.   THE WHISTLEBLOWER is a fictionalized version of real events.  Names of companies and characters have been changed in addition to events being compressed.  Still the film is powerful and focuses on a problem that is widespread in several countries.  It focuses on the evils of sex trafficking and how it effects people from the ones involved to the ones who investigate it to the victims and their families.   It is a must see film if you want your films to show hard truths and show the evils that crusaders like Kathryn Bolkovac face.

SPECIAL FEATURES:
The only extras are previews for other releases and KATHY BOLKOVAC: THE REAL WHISTLEBLOWER sole featurette that focuses on the real Kathryn Bolkovac.

FINAL ANALYSIS:  THE WHISTLEBLOWER is a harrowing thriller with Rachel Weisz's best performance of her career.
