THE FINEST HOURS chronicles the story of the biggest rescue by a small Coast Guard boat in U.S. Coast Guard history.  In 1952, a massive winter storm splits two T-2 oil tankers in half.  One intrepid crew led by Captain Bernie Webber (Chris Pine) has to venture out into this dangerous storm to rescue the crew of one of those oil tanks.  Chief Engineer Ray Sybert (Casey Affleck) struggles to buy time for rescue. Meanwhile Bernie’s girlfriend (Holliday Grainger) waits anxiously for Bernie to return.

 

THE FINEST HOURS works the best when focused on the rescue and survival dramas where the relationship between Bernie and his girl (who asks him to marry her- she is a very forward girl) is a little melodramatic.

FINAL ANALYSIS: THE FINEST HOUR is a good tale of heroism despite the flawed relationship melodrama.  The real story featurette provides extra detail to the movie.
