Hundreds of years after civilization as we know was destroyed in the Sixty Minute War, predator cities like London track down smaller settlements on wells and wanting to destroy the Anti-Tractionists who either want to have their towns in one place or be free to fly with the wind in their airships. Hester Shaw wants revenge against the Deputy Mayor of London (Hugo Weaving) who murdered her mother Pandora. Her revenge is thwarted as Tom, a historian, spots her attempt to kill Valentine. He chases after Hester and he is soon pushed out of London for things that Valentine didn't want him to hear. Valentine finds a Resurrection Man called Shrike who is hunting Hester for breaking her promise to him. Tom and Hester are on the run as their adventures lead them to an old friend of Hester’s mother. They soon find themselves in a battle to save the settlement behind the Shield Wall from the quantum weapon named Medusa that Valentine wants to use to breach it.

MORTAL ENGINES was a box office flop that really suffered bad timing when it was released and it deserved to be to a spring or summer movie where it would grow legs. This film adaptation of the first book of the Mortal Engines book series by Phillip Reeves gives an interesting introduction into the world of MORTAL ENGINES which is two hour sci-fi adventure written by the writers of the LORD OF THE RINGS movies. The movie is decorated with fantastic production design, costume design, and good CGI from WETA.

FINAL ANALYSIS: MORTAL ENGINES deserves a chance to be watched if you are on of the many that skipped it in theaters. The making-of features are interesting to watch that show a deeper world that a two hour sci-fi adventure didn't have time to fully describe. Poor box office performance means we won't see the other three books in the MORTAL ENGINES series adapted for screen. It is one best sci-fi adventure movies of 2018 that comes highly recommended.
