ANGEL OF DEATH

DVD Review by David Blackwell

DETAILS: 93 minutes, movie trailer, previews

STUDIO: MGM

RELEASE DATE:   1-18-2005

ANALYSIS: Detective Maria Delgado (Mira Sorvino) transfers to the old Spanish town, Seville. She is soon wrapped up in an investigation of bizarre murders during Holy week. The killer is dressed up in the red robes belonging to the Brotherhood of Christ. The investigation reveals ties to brutal killings that took place at La Caridad during the Spanish Civil War.

Maria is running from ecents that took place at the last place she was a detective. The old woman who discovered two bodies brings up her terrible memories of La Caridad when she was 14.

Mira Sorvino knows how to pick roles that she wants to do. More power to her, but she must been hard up for money. Oliver Martinez phones in his perfromance while Feodor Atkine puts passion into playing Torillo. The music score is it's own character. I like the flavor the score brings to this thriller.

Now I was curious and I had to check out to see what other online reviewers thought of ANGEL OF DEATH. I liked the movie. It was an average thriller which you can punch holes in if you don't turn your brain off. The reviews on this movie are hysterically funny. I never had a better time reaidng the reviews over watching a movie. I can agree Mira does look in a short skirt and we get see her show off her nice legs. Many plot holes and cliches do riddle ANGEL OF DEATH (for an adaptation of what I've heard was a complex novel). Maybe one needs to form a drinking game or make fun of it in a Mystery science Theater 3000 kind of way. I can imagine the drinking game. Drink everytime Mira looks like she is sleepwalking through her role. Drink some more when the detectives fall into a badly written suspense scene. Then drink even more when you see Mira in a skirt or see her go off on her own while her partnner does nothing (except harrass a transvestite at a dating service).

VIDEO/AUDIO: ANGEL OF DEATH is presented in 1.78:1 Anamorphic Widescreen. Image detail is good. Color is so-so and blacks are good.

Audio options are English 5.1 Dolby Surround or French 5.1 with the option of English or Spanish subtitles. Dialogue sometimes required turning on the subtitles since some of it was hard to understand what they were saying. The music is well represented. I wish a Spanish langauge track was included since the dubbing is so-so.

EXTRAS: Just the trailer for ANGEL OF DEATH and other MGM releases.

FINAL ANALYSIS: ANGEL OF DEATH goes to show Mira Sorvino is on her own unique career path in this movie that many critics hated to death.
