DISC 6- SPLIT DECISION/ A WEAK LINK/ REVEILLE/ three featurettes

When JAG was feeling long in the tooth, NCIS was a refreshing breath of new energy. A spin-off show totally different from JAG and in great company with CSI (and other crime shows). The only real big downside of the set is that they didn't include the JAG two parter that doubled as a pilot for the series (even though the creative team say YANKEE WHITE is the real pilot). Episodes that stuck out to me when I watched the first season on TV when NCIS started were BETTE NOIRE, DEAD MAN TALKING, and REVEILLE. ENIGMA is notable for the guest starring role by Terry O'Quinn (MILLENNIUM, LOST) who played a couple of different characters on JAG and another character during another episode of NCIS. BETTE NOIRE and REVEILLE tie into the two part second season finale and the two part season three opener. In an ironic twist of fate, one of the scenes in REVEILLE comes true in the second season finale. I may have dropped off the radar when watching NCIS during the third season, but the comedy and stories make NCIS unique show to watch and better than JAG.

Special Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon) is a tough NCIS investigator with three ex-wives. He is partnered with Kate (Sasha Alexander) and womanizer Tony DiNozzo (Michael Weatherly). They travel and solve a variety of cases. They are soon joined by one more, McGee, who becomes a regular member of the team in season 2. The dynamic between the agents and the forensics people, Abby (Pauly Perrette) and Ducky (David McCallum). Gibbs wants to get to the point while tony always want to score. McGee and Abby find a common kinship in each other.

VIDEO: 1.78:1 (Anamorphic Widescreen)

Nice transfers despite some video grain showing up. Image detail is nice.

AUDIO: English 2.0 Dolby Surround

Subtitles: English Close Captioning

Dialogue and sound are clear. Not a bad surround mix for a TV Show.

SPECIAL FEATURES: Don Bellisario's audio commentary for YANKEE WHITE is full of production insights about the episode and casting of the show, but it is a little dry. I hope they pair up Don in the future with other writers and producers and the cast for the audio commentary tracks.

Three featuretts are on the DVD set (sadly without interviews with the cast members. Only interviews with the writers and producers):

N.C.I.S. CREATING SEASON 1- how the show came together and the producers consider YASNKEE WHITE the real pilot for NCIS with no footage from the two part JAG story that was the pilot for NCIS.

N.C.I.S. BUILDING THE TEAM- It is all about the cast and how the roles were cast. Cast and crew talk about the characters. David McCallum is like the tech advisor for his scenes since he really studied what his character Ducky does. Many of the characters are the actors. Pauly Perrette has a Masters in Forensics Science and fell into acting by accident ten years ago. In a way, she is Abby (since the actress is a Goth too).

N.C.I.S. DEFINING THE LOOK- Lots of talk about how they achieve the look of NCIS on the limited budget for a TV show and the editing of the show.

FINAL ANALYSIS: NCIS Season 1 is a must have for fans of the show and anyone who needs to check out a crime show with a little humor.
