ROSWELL- The Complete Third Season

DISC FIVE- FOUR ALIENS AND A BABY/ GRADUATION/ two featurettes

ROSWELL was the best of both worlds in it's third season. The show perfectly mixed the best elements of season 1 and season 2. ROSWELLL turned back to one of the original themes of season one which was some humans feared (and others wanted to destroy) the aliens. Except for the whole unfortunate episode with Kivar (INTERRUPTUS), the third season has sveral strong episodes. Once you get to CH-CH-CHANGES, ROSWELL becomes a roller coaster that doesn't want to let go until the end credits of GRADUATION (the series finale). My favorite moment of this season (and the entire show) is the scene between Michael and Maria in GRADUATION of how he loves her. ROSWELL played out many different stories including a wedding, a New Year's Eve episode, another Christmas episode (not as good as last year's episode), Michael's second job as a security gaurd, and Valenti starting a band. Also Liz experiences some changes in CH-CH-CHANGES and Max realizes healing her isn't without it's consequences. Sadly, ROSWELL didn't have a fourth season because the writers had plans for what they wanted to do next. Fans hope for a movie, but chances for revival as a movie series are very slim. ROSWELL will be remembered as one of the best series I have ever watched. It had heart, drama, emotion, action, sci-fi, and characters you really cared for.

VIDEO: 1.78:1 (Anamorphic Widescreen)

The colors and blacks are nice. Image quality is great. The transfers for these episodes are as good as the transfers for season 1 and season 2 DVD sets.

AUDIO: English 5.1 Dolby Digital

Subtitles: English, French, Spanish

Dialogue is crytsal clear. Music and sound effects are good. FOX always seem to do a great job with the audio on their DVD releases.

SPECIAL FEATURES: The set features audio commentaries for four episodes: SECRETS & LIES and BEHIND THE MUSIC are with Executive Producer/ Director Jonathan Frakes, I MARRIED AN ALIEN with Exec Prod/ Writer Ronald D. Moore, and GRADUATION with Exec Prod/ Writer Jason Katims. Jonathan Frakes just doesn't do very good commentaries. He doesn't have much to say like Ronald D. Moore and I just wanted to get away from his sometime "No Duh!" comments. His two episode commentaries are as bad as the audio commentary he did for STAR TREK: FIRST CONTACT. Ronald D. Moore says in I MARRIED AN ALIEN how the episode came about, what shows inspired it (I Dream Of Jeannie and Bewitched), and the more freedom they had with writing the season 3 episodes for UPN. I just wish they included more audio commentaries or different ones with other people from the show (instead of the ones Mr. Frakes recorded). jason Katims has the best commentary of the four. He drops many stories about the production of the final episode (one of the actors broke their arm playing hockey about two days before the end of the shoot) and other details (hint at where they could have went and disappoinment writing the Skins out in season 2).

The CLASS OF 2002 featurette has interviews with cast and crew. They talk about the changes they did for the third season, the themes of the show, and combining the best elements of season 1 and season 2. It's a disppointing featurette (not as good as the featurettes done on the making of season 1 and season 2). SHIRI APPLEBY'S DVD TOUR TO JAPAN is a more fun featurette as you see her answer questions in Japan while she is in a kimono with her hair in pig tales. The big disappointment with this set are we get no audio commenatries with the cast and no gag reel (they do exist for the show).

FINAL ANALYSIS: If you're a fan, you will be jumping for Mars that season 3 of ROSWELL has arrived to DVD finally in North America (Season 3 has been released in other countries months ago). I'm glad FOX included some extras, but I wish they went the extra mile on this set. I am proud they released the entire series to DVD.
