THE 4400 The Complete Second Season

DVD Review by David Blackwell

DETAILS: 560 minutes (12 episodes on 4 discs), three audio commentaries, three featurettes

STUDIO: Paramount/ CBS DVD/ American Zoetrope

RELEASE DATE: 5-23-3006

DISC 1- WAKE-UP CALL (double length)/ VOICES CARRY/ WEIGHT OF THE WORLD

DISC 2- SUFFER THE CHILDREN/ AS FATE WOULD HAVE IT/ LIFE INTERRUPTED/ CARRIER

DISC 3- REBIRTH/ HIDDEN/ LOCKDOWN/ THE FIFTH PAGE

DISC 4- MOMMY'S BOSSES, three featurettes

The second season of THE 4400 improves on the first. Richard and Lily are on the run from Jordan Collier only to end up at The 4400 Center later in the season. Events start to build as one major character is killed in AS FATE WOULD HAVE IT, Tom falls in love with a member of the 4400 in a weird way, and another character comes back to strike out with his plan to bring down the 4400. It is season that brings many questions of why 4400 people were taken and each given a certain ability. It makes you wonder what the people in the future have planned for humanity. Some people fear the 4400 while others are willing to embrace them. The second season builds on the stories from season one and inject character development along the way. I can't wait for season 3 to start on USA Network (on June 11th) as a couple of cliffhanger moments at the end of MOMMY'S BOSSES leaves the door open for some interesting moments.

VIDEO: 1.78:1 (Anamorphic Widescreen)

Nice image detail, good colors, and OK shadow values. Not bad looking transfers at all.

AUDIO: English 5.1 Dolby Surround, English 2.0 DS

Subtitles: only close captioning

Dialogue is clear. The sound mix is OK, but it isn't quite as dynamic as some other series like the STAR TREK shows on DVD.

SPECIAL FEATURES: Audio commentaries were recorded for AS FATE WOULD HAVE IT, THE FIFTH PAGE, and MOMMY'S BOSSES with Joel Gretsch and Jacqueline McKenzie, Craig Sweeny and Ira Steven Behr. You learn about how hard it is make thwe show on a tight schedule in addition to a little humor and insights injected into the commentaries. I hope they get a few of the other actors to do commentaries for season 3.

On disc four are three featurettes:

CREATING THE BALL OF LIGHT- the story of how THE 4400 got developed and ended up at USA network.

RETURN OF THE 4400- a promo featurette on season 2 and including the changes they had to make when one actor had to leave after six episodes.

A STITCH IN TIME- a look at the possibility and theories of time travel.

FINAL ANALYSIS: The addition of a few extras make this DVD set a must for fans as season 3 starts on June 11th on USA. A very good job from CBS DVD with this set.
