THE BROTHERS GRIMM

DVD Review by David Blackwell

DETAILS: 118 minutes, director's audio commentary, deleted scenes with optional commentary, two featurettes

STUDIO: Dimension/ MGM

RELEASE DATE: 12-20-2005

Terry Gilliam is a director whose films have had an impact and they have the unique touch of a genius whether it is BRAZIL, TIME BANDITS, 12 MONKEYS, or even FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS. THE BROTHERS GRIMM wasn't without it's troubles. Terry had his disagreements with the Weinstein brothers during the production and post-production and the film even was delayed by a year. Matt Damon and Heath Ledger play Will and Jake Grimm, con men who stage the supernatural to get money out of towns and collect fairy tales along the way. The French catch onto their act and order the brothers Grimm to investigate the disappearance of 11 missing girls in a village part of French occupied Germany. They team up with a young woman who is searching for her two missing sisters in the cursed forest outside of the village. Together they discover the truth behind the missing girls and the curse. THE BROTHERS GRIMM is a surreal fantasy film with horror, elements from the Grimm fairy tales, and a little humor. It is at least good enough to watch and enjoy once. The visuals are amazing. Great acting turns from Damon, Ledger, and Peter Stormare. Even Headey adds to the mix proving you can have another beauty besides Monica Bellucci.

VIDEO: 1.85:1 (Anamorphic Widescreen)

AUDIO: English 5.1 Dolby, French 2.0 Dolby

Subtitles: English, Spanish

The transfer captures the look of the film beautifully and the image detail is nice. Dialogue is clear and the 5.1 mix isn't half bad at all.

SPECIAL FEATURES: The feature commentary with Terry Gilliam is a refined one (just a little dry sounding) as Terry talks about THE BROTHERS GRIMM and it's production. The 12 deleted scenes (15 minutes total) have optional commentary by the director and 2 to 3 scenes are very interesting (including the big fight with a tree sequence- the most expensive digital effects scene of the film that ended up being cut).

BRINGING THE FAIRY TALE TO LIFE is a featurette focusing on the film from the characters, casting, the story, director Terry Gilliam, and the stories of the real Grimm brothers. THE VISUAL MAGIC OF THE BROTHERS GRIMM is a look at the digital effects of the film (the CGI wolf and an effect during the climax were the hardest effects to do).

FINAL ANALYSIS:  THE BROTHERS GRIMM is a visual treat with a story that is fun enough to watch once. The extras are a little better than the usual single disc efforts from Dimension.
